OkCupid is a mix between a personals ads site and an online matchmaking website, which uses extensive questionnaires and quizzes to find suitable matches for its users.

The feature that makes OkCupid stand out from all other matchmaking sites is that you are able to message other users for free.

You begin by answering a series of questionnaires and quizzes concerning your likes, dislikes, preferences, turn offs etc. The more you answer, the more likely your best match will be found for you. Once you have finished answering all of the questions, you are able to search through profiles of other users.

The search filters are extensive. You can search for girls, guys, straight, gay, bi, age, location, if they have uploaded a photo, log on date, join date, keywords, ethnicity, height, if they smoke or drink, religion, education, job, income, children, pets, languages and even diet.

However, if you prefer, you can let OkCupid do the work and find a match for you by using one of their matching services. One of them is called  “quickmatch”. Quickmatch searches for a suitable match based upon your answers to the questionnaires. It uses and displays three figures when it finds a match. They are:

• Match % is the number of questions that you and the other user had the same answer on the questionnaires as well as taking into account the “importance” answer which you assigned when answering the question.
• Friend % is the number of questions you and the other user answered the same but the “importance” is ignored.
• Enemy % is the number of questions you and the other disagreed on.

Overall, the free messaging service is great, but the matchmaking questions and quizzes take way too long to answer. And they try to be all over the place instead of specializing either as online personals site or matchmaking site which, in our opinion, makes it more difficult to offer a good service at both.
